SNS meeting at Chiangrai Rajabhat University, Chiangrai, Thailand
Same as last month, our new members - 8 boys from The Mae Fah Luang Foundation - joint us. Thank K.Por for picking them up and seeing them off safely.
P' Momay and her friends - P'Mate P'Pim & P'Note - prepared the the second floor balcony and 2 eight-inched-refracting telescopes for us to observed the hopeful twinkling night sky. Since the theme of this month is "Astronomy VS Astrology", we invited Ajarn Prayong Huangklang - the manager of CRUO - as a special lecturer. Ajarn Payong is keen on Thai Astrology and studied about it for many decades. This time he taught us how astrology relate to astronomy as following:
1. Since planets change their locations every night, we can look up the their current location from Thairat Newspaper page 16 (or page 11 on the Lotto days). We lerned how to read and draw the traditional Thai astrology star map (the one on page 16).
2. Twelve background constellations that the sun moves pass in 365 days are called "The 12 Zodiacs". Each zodiac rises and sets every day (360 degrees in 24 hours). That is the sun rises up every day with a littel bit different background; rises with Aries in April and with Taurus in May etc. For Thai astrology, a person's zodiac means the zodiac that is rising in the east at the time he was born not the zodiac rising with the sun on that day. Thus we need to know the time we were born in order to know what our zodiac is.
3. There is not yet scienctific explanations of the influnce of the stars or planets to human's destiny but recently the changing of earth atmosphere which may relate to human's physical health.
etc. etc. etc......
(some chewing spicy grilled see weed, some taking chocolate.....)
The sky was partially clear. We saw not only 3 Galilean Jupiter's sattellites and our moon's surface from 8" telescope, but also some part of the Milky way with our naked eyes! Saturn did not rise at that time yet...pity :( The 0.5 m telescope was not work properly that night so we coudn't enjoy a sight from it....pity again :(
We are having friends from Bangkok to join SNS coming this next 23 Oct 2009. See you guys then.
:)
